Canine Cognitive Dysfunction

Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD), or ‘Doggy Dementia’ as some folks call it, is a very common condition. As many as 35% of dogs older than 11 years old are suffering from the condition (1).

What are the signs of CCD?

  • Disorientation
  • Changes in their interactions with familiar people or pets
  • Sleep disturbances
  • House soiling (ie the loss of a learned behavior)
  • Anxiety
  • Changes in activity levels

What increases the risk for CCD?

  • A sedentary lifestyle
  • An unhealthy environment (ie, air pollution, too hot or cold, lack of enrichment, too much noise, etc)
  • Poor nutrition
  • Medical needs not being addressed
  • A history of neurological, ocular or auditory disorders
