Canine Cognitive Dysfunction
Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD), or ‘Doggy Dementia’ as some folks call it, is a very common condition. As many as 35% of dogs older than 11 years old are suffering from the condition (1).
What are the signs of CCD?
- Disorientation
- Changes in their interactions with familiar people or pets
- Sleep disturbances
- House soiling (ie the loss of a learned behavior)
- Anxiety
- Changes in activity levels
What increases the risk for CCD?
- A sedentary lifestyle
- An unhealthy environment (ie, air pollution, too hot or cold, lack of enrichment, too much noise, etc)
- Poor nutrition
- Medical needs not being addressed
- A history of neurological, ocular or auditory disorders
