Detoxing
'Detox' often holds magical connotations...
with many seeming to mean a quick fix to all problems by simply removing toxins. Unfortunately, no such magic exists! But there really are helpful things you can do that would fall under the category of a detox to improve your pet’s health. Here are the steps to take to help rid the body of harmful toxic build-up:
Step 1: Eliminate as many environmental, dietary and medical toxins as possible.
Step 2: Feed a more anti-inflammatory diet. This often means less kibble and more fresh food!
Step 3: Support the kidney, liver and gut with herbs and species-specific probiotics or fecal microbiota transplants as these are the organs that rid the body of most toxic build up.
Step 4: Individualized detoxification i.e. heavy metal binding. This is best done in conjunction with testing to know it’s necessary and to facilitate monitoring the efficacy of your detoxification protocol.
When would I recommend a detox:
- Your pet is or has been on medications
- Your pet recently underwent vaccinations
- Your pet has a chronic disease
- Your pet is not themselves
- Your pet has a known exposure to a high toxic load due to their lifestyle
